Troubleshoot PDF conversion and export problems

Practical checks for password prompts, missing content, failed processing and incomplete downloads.

Keep the original and stop using an output that looks incomplete. A successful download only proves that a file was produced; it does not prove that every page or object was handled correctly.

A password or encryption message appears

Some PDFs have permission restrictions even when a viewer opens them without asking for a password. Use credentials you are authorised to use, or ask the owner for a suitable copy. Do not rename the file or assume that clearing cookies removes document encryption. If the message appears for several ordinary files, record the exact error and browser version for support.

The converted document is missing content

Compare the source and output at the affected location. Look for a header, floating image, table, embedded object or unsupported font. Check the converter's warnings. If exact Office layout matters, export from the original application and use that PDF for later editing. See Word conversion checks.

Processing is slow or fails

Large images and complex pages can require much more memory than the file size suggests. Close unnecessary tabs and try a smaller copy or page selection. Use cancellation when it is available. Do not repeatedly start the same operation while it is still running.

If a smaller selection succeeds, test the affected section separately to identify whether one page causes the issue. Keep the original unchanged. A browser refresh can discard unsaved work, so save what you can before restarting.

The download is absent or incomplete

Check the browser's downloads list and any blocked-download notification. Confirm you used the final download action rather than only a preview. Open the saved file in another viewer and compare its page count. Do not distribute an empty, damaged or partly converted file.

Search finds nothing on a visible page

The page may be an image or have an unusable text layer. Try the OCR workflow on a copy and check recognised text. A search with no matches is not proof that a sensitive name is absent.

Send a useful, safe report

Include the workspace and tool name, browser version, approximate file size, page count, exact error and the step that failed. A fictional file that reproduces the issue is preferable. Remove personal details from screenshots. Never send a case password, certificate password or live sensitive records through an ordinary support message.
